Alice Sebold and Europa Editions

Europa Editions has announced that “Lovely Bones” author Alice Sebold has teamed up with the publisher (of such names as Alina Bronsky and Amelie Nothomb) to launch Tonga Books, a new series devoted to “dark, literary” fiction. Europa also reports they’ve already committed to publish the translation of Bronsky’s next novel. Very nice news all of this.

Following Jeff’s post about Sharmila Sen’s fascinating essay on translation,a quick bit of goofiness I encountered in Zift: A Socialist Noir, an odd, funny, borderline absurd little novel of murder and betrayal in communist Bulgaria by Vladislav Todorov. What caught my eye was a note from translator Joseph Benatov that was appended to this passage:
