For me, BookExpo is about the anecdotal conversations and meeting new people in the industry, be they booksellers or publishing people. This year was noteworthy for the number of authors, at least in my opinion. There have always been authors at BookExpo, sometimes authors doing signings at booths or those who bought badges in the hopes of finding a publisher. This year, however, there were many self-published authors. One woman who worked for a digital book conversation company and had self-published a digital novel wanted me to explain BookExpo to her.
That’s just not what independents or independence is about and in a world where almost everyone has access to exactly the same products it’s our curatorial independence that we’re going to have to rely upon.
Once again from the sweating streets of NYC, the city that won’t let me sleep.
To people in the book world, in retail and in publishing, the idea that someone might not know about or even care about BookExpo is a trifle astounding.
